Beautifully detailed sculpture of Demeter, the Greek Goddess of corn and the harvest, and daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. When Demeter's daughter Persephone was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld, Demeter's grief was so great that she neglected the land; no plants grew, and famine devastated, until Persephone was returned. At which time the plants and flowers began growing once again.
