Suffragist and Women’s Rights Activist

Sculpted in 2021

Alice Paul was an American suffragist and women’s rights activist who lived from 1885 to 1977. She was a leader of the National Woman’s Party, which was dedicated to securing the right to vote for women in the United States.

Paul was born in New Jersey and educated at Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania. She became involved in the women’s suffrage movement in England, where she was inspired by the tactics of British suffragettes, including nonviolent protests and civil disobedience.

When Paul returned to the United States, she became a leader in the National Woman’s Party, known for its militant tactics and use of demonstrations, pickets, and other forms of nonviolent resistance. Under Paul’s leadership, the National Woman’s Party played a crucial role in the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote.

Alice Paul is remembered today as a pioneering figure in the women’s suffrage movement and a symbol of the determination and courage of women who fought for their rights. She is also recognized for her contributions to the broader struggle for women’s rights and equality, including her leadership in the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, which would have guaranteed equal rights for women under the law.
