Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. Born into slavery in Maryland in the early 1820s, Tubman escaped to freedom in 1849 and became a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by escaped slaves to reach freedom in the North.
Over the next decade, Tubman made more than 13 missions to rescue around 70 enslaved people, including family and friends, using the network. During the Civil War, she served as a cook, nurse, and spy for the Union Army, and helped recruit black troops. After the war, she continued her activism, working for women’s suffrage and helping elderly and impoverished former slaves.
Tubman’s life and work have made her an iconic figure in American history, and she is remembered as a hero and a symbol of courage, determination, and selflessness. She was also a powerful advocate for abolition and women’s rights, and her legacy continues to inspire people around the world today.
