Ida B. Wells was an American journalist, suffragist, and civil rights activist who lived from 1862 to 1931. Born into slavery in Mississippi, she gained national prominence in the 1890s as a leader in the fight against lynching and racial violence in the United States.
Wells was a co-owner and editor of a black-owned newspaper, the Memphis Free Speech, where she wrote articles exposing the violent and unjust treatment of African Americans in the South. Her reporting and activism on the issue of lynching led her to become one of the most prominent voices in the African American community and one of the leading figures in the struggle for racial justice in the United States.
Wells was also a pioneer in the women’s suffrage movement, working to secure voting rights for women and advocating for their full and equal participation in American society. She was a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), one of the oldest and most influential civil rights organizations in the United States.
Ida B. Wells is remembered today as a trailblazer in the fight against racial violence and discrimination, and as a fearless advocate for justice and equality for all people, regardless of race or gender. Her legacy continues to inspire activists and advocates around the world to work for a more just and equitable society.
