The Portrait Monument
A REPLICA OF THE MONUMENT FOUND INSIDE THE U.S. CAPITOL BUILDING
Sculpted in 2021
The “Portrait Monument” is a sculpture created by Adelaide Johnson and installed in the United States Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C. The work is a bust portrait of suffragist Susan B. Anthony, one of the most prominent leaders of the women’s suffrage movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The sculpture was commissioned by the National Woman’s Party and was dedicated in the rotunda on February 15, 1921. It was one of the first monuments to a woman installed in the U.S. Capitol and was a symbol of the growing recognition of women’s contributions to American society and the struggle for women’s rights.
Today, the “Portrait Monument” remains an important symbol of the fight for women’s rights and suffrage and is a popular destination for visitors to the Capitol Rotunda. The work is widely recognized as one of Adelaide Johnson’s most important and iconic sculptures and is considered a masterpiece of American portraiture.
