A devotional sculpture for a prayer garden

Giving a sacred outdoor space a recognizable focal point

Christ the King Ministry commissioned Statues.com to create a custom Angel of Peace of Fatima statue for its prayer garden in Cullman, Alabama.

The completed figure stands 32 inches tall and occupies an 18-by-18-inch footprint. Sculptor Elaine Bell and the Statues.com Art Team developed the original artwork in clay, refined it through photographic reviews with Father Jose Viola, made a production mold and cast the approved sculpture in white bonded marble.

The installed statue presents the youthful angel standing with the Sacred Host above a chalice. Its quiet expression, lowered gaze and restrained gesture establish a devotional presence without overwhelming the intimate courtyard setting.

The project in one sentence Multiple devotional references were interpreted into one original, site-specific religious sculpture designed to support prayer, reflection and Eucharistic contemplation.

The Fatima connection

Why the Host and chalice define the figure

The Angel of Peace also identified in the Fatima tradition as the Guardian Angel or Angel of Portugal—appeared to the three shepherd children in 1916, before the Marian apparitions of 1917.

The official Sanctuary of Fatima narrative identifies the children as Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto. During the third apparition, the angel appeared with a chalice and a Host suspended above it. Those Eucharistic objects provide the central identifying symbols in the commissioned sculpture.

Rather than reproduce a single historic artwork, the team created an original standing interpretation. The raised Host, chalice, contemplative gaze and simplified garment communicate the subject directly while maintaining a calm silhouette appropriate to a prayer garden.

Reference interpretation

Creating one coherent sculpture from multiple sources

The project was not a direct mold or one-to-one reproduction. Father Jose supplied photographs, and the art team reviewed additional depictions associated with the Angel of Peace and Angel of Portugal.

01

Identify the essential symbols

The Host and chalice had to remain immediately legible because they connect the sculpture to the third apparition and its Eucharistic meaning.

02

Resolve inconsistent references

Available depictions varied in facial character, head angle, hand placement, garment treatment, pose and overall proportion.

03

Design for three dimensions

Details that work in a photograph still need clear balance, silhouette and visual hierarchy when viewed from changing angles outdoors.

The goal was recognition without imitation: preserve the subject's essential devotional identity while resolving the figure as one original sculpture.

Project design principle

Original clay sculpture

Shaping expression, gesture and quiet reverence

Elaine Bell began the physical artwork in clay, where the figure could be reviewed and adjusted before mold making.

At 32 inches tall, the sculpture needed refined close-range detail and a clear overall silhouette. The face was modeled with a composed expression and downward focus toward the Host. The hands were arranged to connect the two Eucharistic elements, while the long garment and broad sleeves established a simple, continuous vertical rhythm.

The clay stage also resolved the relationship between the bare feet, garment hem and textured naturalistic base. These elements help the finished figure feel grounded while separating it visually from the architectural pedestal.

This project demonstrates why a photograph is a starting point rather than a finished design. Our guide explains how custom statues can be created from photographs and where artistic interpretation becomes necessary.

Collaborative review

Confirming the artwork before production

As the clay sculpture developed, Statues.com shared progress photographs with Father Jose Viola for review.

The review process focused on whether the face carried the intended spiritual character, whether the Eucharistic gesture was clear, whether the garment felt consistent with familiar devotional imagery and whether the complete figure read with the expected reverence.

Resolving those questions in clay protected the project from expensive late-stage changes. Once the design received approval, the team could move confidently into mold making and casting.

Why photographic approvals mattered Because the sculpture combined multiple references rather than copying one physical original, client review confirmed both theological recognition and artistic direction before the form became permanent.

Production sequence

From approved clay to white bonded marble

Reference development

Client photographs and additional devotional sources were compared to identify essential symbols and a workable artistic direction.

Clay sculpting

Elaine Bell developed the figure's expression, hands, Eucharistic objects, garment, posture and integrated base in three dimensions.

Client review and refinement

Progress images were shared with Father Jose Viola so key details could be evaluated and adjusted before approval.

Production mold

A mold taken from the approved clay preserved the modeled surface, including the face, hands, vessel, fabric transitions and base texture.

Bonded marble casting

The sculpture was cast in white bonded marble and finished to create a cohesive, stone-like devotional presence.

Prayer-garden placement

The completed statue was displayed on a pedestal beside the ministry's outdoor altar and landscaped reflection space.

Material selection

Why white bonded marble suited the commission

White bonded marble is a cast marble-composite material capable of preserving detailed modeled surfaces while producing the clean, light appearance often requested for religious sculpture.

For this project, the pale finish allows daylight to define the angel's facial planes, hands, garment folds and textured base. It also creates strong contrast against red brick, dark stone and green plantings in the prayer garden.

  • Fine reproduction of modeled detail
  • Classical white stone-like appearance
  • Clear light and shadow across the garment
  • Visual contrast within the landscaped site

Reading the sculpture at close range

The face, Eucharistic gesture and full silhouette were designed to work together, whether a visitor approaches from across the courtyard or pauses directly beside the pedestal.
