George Washington in the Portrait Tradition of Jean-Antoine Houdon
Produced in the United States, this George Washington bust is a bonded-marble replica based on the celebrated portrait sculpture created by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon.
Houdon traveled to Mount Vernon in 1785 while preparing an official statue of Washington for the Commonwealth of Virginia. During the visit, he modeled Washington from life and recorded the measurements that informed one of the most influential sculptural likenesses of the first United States president.
This reproduction translates that historical portrait into an accessible display format for homes, offices, schools, libraries and civic collections. The available white surface emphasizes the classical modeling, while the hand-applied bronze-tone option introduces warmer contrast without changing the underlying material.
Houdon's original clay bust at Mount Vernon is widely regarded as one of the most accurate surviving likenesses of Washington, giving later replicas a documented connection to an eighteenth-century portrait created from direct observation.
